La infección reside en los tejidos sinoviales o periarticulares y suele ser bacteriana - en adultos jóvenes con frecuencia Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Sin embargo, también pueden ocurrir infecciones bacterianas no gonocócicas que pueden destruir rápidamente las estructuras articulares. Los síntomas incluyen dolor de aparición súbita, derrame, y restricción del rango de movimiento activo y pasivo, por lo general en una sola articulación.
